HYDRODYNAMIC OF RIVER FLOW DURING A DROUGHT EVENT (CASE STUDY, KAROON RIVER, KHUZESTAN, IRAN)

Mehdi Fuladipanah

Abstract

Hydrodynamic characteristics of flow river depends on flow discharge. Drought event occurrence affects flow regime which will cause significant variation at river characteristics. Therefore, estimation drought threshold and its consequence will have critical role in water resources management. In this paper, consequences of drought on Karoon River, Khuzestan, Iran was investigated. Mollasani-Ahvaz reach was selected for this research. After analyzing drought zoning, truncation level Q70 was estimated for different return periods. These discharges were used as entrance discharges at Mollasani station at upstream of the reach and flow characteristics as flow discharge, Flow velocity, and sediment discharge were calculated using HEC-RAS model. The results was compared with normal conditions. This research showed that the most effect of drought is on sediment discharge, flow discharge and flow velocity, respectively.
