VARIETAL PERFORMANCE OF COWPEA (VIGNA UNGUICULATA L.) AGAINST GROWTH, SEED YIELD AND QUALITY ATTRIBUTES

Abstract

India is thickly populated country and most of the residents of this country are vegetarian. The increased population without check is the main handicap in our progress and resulted as food shortage, malnutrition and poverty. The solution for control of these problems partly may be only the major source of adoption of nutritionally rich vegetable crop like cowpea because their seeds make up the largest contributor to the overall protein intake of several rural and urban families hence cowpea is the poor man’s major source of protein. In view of that, experiment was executed to examine the response of ten varieties of cowpea during summer season 2014 and outcome of experiment revealed that, the variety Arka Garima (V8) shows earliness in germination (4 days) and germination percent (100%), whereas highest plant height was contributed by variety Arka Samridhi (V10). The early flowering (53.33 days) was recorded with variety Kashi Kanchan (V6), while early maturity of pod from flowering (23 days) and minimum crop duration (88 days) was recorded with variety AVCP-1 (V1). Arka Suman (V9) achieved significantly superior for yield and yield attributes over remaining varieties. Likewise the variety Kashi Kanchan (V6) found superior with quality traits.
