Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the effectiveness of filter media to reduce total suspended solid (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater at Storm Beer Brewery, Bali. The type of the research used Postest Only with Control Group Design, carried out in three replications. This research consist of two phase, first phase, the wastewater was flown through the installation used three combination of filter media. First combination used gravel, silica stone and zeolite. Second filter combination used gravel, silica stone and activated carbon, and the third combination used gravel, silica stone, activated carbon and zeolite. The wastewater was flown through the installation and then the sample was collected through first, second, third combination and control was flown through without filter media. The second phase used the best combination of filter media and conditioning it by steeping the best filter combination in the wastewater for seven days, after seven days, the wastewater was flown through the installation. Wastewater samples from first and second phase were analyzed at laboratory with TSS, BOD5 and COD parameter. The result of this research showed that the best filter combination for reducing TSS, BOD5 and COD is the first filter combination. The effectiveness of TSS, BOD5 and COD were 32,10%, 38,05% and 14,99%, respectively. After conditioning, the effectiveness of TSS, BOD5 and COD were 59,82%, 41,87% and 29,38%, respectively.
