BIOREMEDIATION OF DYE BEARING EFFLUENTS USING MICROBIAL BIOMASS

Abstract

Wastewater from the textile industry contains a variety of polluting substances including dyes. Dyes are harmful for both human and animal biota. Increasing environmental legislation is being imposed to control the release of harmful dyes into the environment. Conventional waste water treatments are too expensive since they produce large amount of byproducts, muck production and also possess problem during disposal. Biological treatment especially biosorption using nonliving biomass is relatively inexpensive way to remove dyes from the wastewater. The successful removal of dyes from the effluent depends on the functional groups present in the cell wall of microorganisms. In this manuscript, we briefly discussed about the biosorption of various dyes by using microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, algae and yeast.
