PERFORMANCE OF ADVANCED WHEAT GENOTYPES UNDER RAINFED ENVIRONMENT OF PUNJAB

N. Gupta and S. K. Thind

Abstract

The field experiments were conducted during rabi seasons of 2009-2012, in order to evaluate the yield response of sixteen diverse genotypes under rainfed environment of Punjab. Significant reductions in yield attributes (earhead per sq.m., grain per ear, test weight), biomass and grain yield were observed in rainfed plots due to moisture limitations affecting the crop production. Genotypic differences in yield response were also significant under both irrigated and rainfed conditions. But some genotypes (BWL0089, BW 9025 and BW 8362) had better yield performance in rainfed system than check varieties, in terms of grain yield attributes, lower stress susceptibility index and higher water productivity. These advanced lines can be opted potentially due to their stable performance and further could be utilized for varietal improvement programmes of rainfed wheat in subtropical India.
