ASSESSMENT OF ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF BACILLUS SPECIES ISOLATED FROM POMEGRANATE FIELD FROM BAGLAN REGION (M.S.), INDIA

RAJENDRABHAI D. VASAIT

Abstract

Soil samples from rhizophere of sugarcane and pomegranate plants were collected and analysed for bacterial content. Mucoid colony forming organism was studied and found to produce antimicrobial substance. Isolated bacterium was identified as Bacillus species on the basis of morphological, biochemical characteristics and 16S rRNA study. Bacillus species was Gram-positive, motile and rod-shaped. On phylogenetic analysis, it was also confirmed that isolate belongs to genus Bacillus and related with species licheniformis AK02. Bacillus species was isolated from the rhizospere soil sample from Baglan region of Nashik District. Antimicrobial activity of isolate was analyzed by agar diffusion method and found that it was effective against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria.
