Abstract

Opencast mining is a common practice, after termination of the mining activities a mine void is developed filled up by rain water. The areas and depth of mine varies. In the present study the physico-chemical parameters of mine water has been analysed in view of development of aquaculture. The finding reveals that the temperature variation in upper and bottom layer of the coal void was 21 to 260C. The pH ranges from 6.8 to 8.8, Conductivity 510 to 1726 μmohs. Total dissolved solids 415 to 1456 ppm, dissolved oxygenconcentration 6.75 to 11.0 ppm and dissolved oxygen saturation 26.7 to 125.65 %. There is drastic changes in dissolved oxygen concentration after the 10 ft of the water depth, free carbon dioxide ranges from 0 to 17.6 ppm, total hardness 244 to 900 ppm, COD ranges 0 to 96 ppm, BOD 1.0 to 2.4 ppm and organic carbon in water ranges 0 to 10.4ppm. The coal void may be develop by simple modification, i.e. flooding with surface water which will improve the water quality for fish culture.
