Abstract
Alcohol as a hepatotoxic beverage leads to conditions such as fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and hepatic cirrhosis, it has an effect on liverâs enzyme level like: AST and ALT. in this retrospective case-control study, 50 alcohol consumer individuals, younger than 25 years old with a normal height and weight, were sampled to evaluate the effect of alcohol on AST and ALT levels and AST/ALT ratio. The measured serum enzyme levels were compared to that of the control group consisted of 50 other individuals who were not alcohol consumers. After 15 days of alcohol withdrawal the alcohol consumer group members were sampled again to determine the changes in enzyme levels. Analysis of the gathered data revealed a significant difference between AST levels and AST/ALT ratio before and after alcohol withdrawal (p<0.01, p<0.05), but ALT levels were not significantly changed. According to the results of the current study alcohol withdrawal can help reduce AST level and AST/ALT ratio.
