Abstract
This study investigated biochemical suitability of Scenedesmus abundans and Chlorella pyrenoidosa as nutritional supplement for human and bovine health. The two microalgae cultures were harvested during the stationary phase of their growth, dried and their powder lyophilized and were analyzed for Protein, Fatty Acid (PUFA) polyunsaturated Fatty acids, Dietary fiber and Vitamin. Their result was compared with reference literature data for Spirulina platensis. The result of the analysis showed that Scenedesmus abundans is higher in vitamin A contents, Dietary Fiber, Fatty Acid and Trace element. Vitamin A contents is found to be 2281.4, while Fatty Acid 36.89%, Trace element 81.62 mg, and fiber 17.0 mg, while Spirulina platensis is higher in protein 60.32 ± 0.15% and essential Amino Acid 47.012 mg and Chlorella pyrenoidosa is higher in fibre with 19.5 mg. The finding from this study indicates that Scenedesmus abundans has the highest potential to serve as food supplement for human and bovine health, because, it has the highest nutrients in four elements out of six parameters used in the study.
