RESPONSE OF DIFFERENT CONCENTRATION OF INDOLE BUTYRIC ACID (IBA) AND ROOTING MEDIA ON CALLUS FORMATION AND ROOTING OF AIR LAYERS IN ACID LIME [CITRUS AURANTIFOLIA (CHRISTM.) SWINGLE] VAR. KAGZI LIME

Abstract

The acid lime [Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle] is the most important fruit crop of India.The total area and production of acid lime in Madhya Pradesh are 10.68 thousand hectares and 235 thousand MT, respectively. The vegetative multiplication through cutting, grafting, layering and budding are commonly practiced. Air layering is an easy method of propagation of this crop and it is widely used for commercial multiplication. The growth, establishment and survival of plant also depend on the quality of rooting media. Vegetative propagation is preferred to reproductive mode of multiplication due to easy maintenance of hereditary characters of the mother plant. Growth regulators have been used to increase the efficiency of propagation by layering. Since the discovery of Indole-butyric acid (IBA), it has been freely used to boost vegetative propagation of plants. Therefore present experiment was undertaken in the Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, RVSKVV Gwalior, (M.P.) during the year of 2014-15 to study the effect of different dose of indole butyric acid (IBA) and rooting media on callus formation and rooting of air layers in acid lime var. Kagzi lime. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three replications. There were different concentration of IBA (0 ppm 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm) and rooting media (soil, soil + vermi compost, soil + cocopeat, soil + leaf mould, soil + vermi compost + cocopeat, soil + Vermi compost + leaf mould and soil + cocopeat + leaf mould) used as an air layering preparation in kagzi lime. The result revealed that maximum callus formation, Number of primary and secondary root, root length was found in soil + vermi compost + cocopeat rooting media. In case of IBA, Significantly higher callus formation and number of primary and secondary root, length of root was recorded under application of 2000 ppm IBA.
