PROSPECTS OF LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE FILM LINED PONDS IN MID HILL AQUACULTURE

Abstract

Temperature is one of the critical environmental factors in the aquatic system that directly affects the various activities and metabolic processes of aquatic organisms. Polyculture of exotic carp is a popular agricultural enterprise in mid hills. The low temperature hinders the growth of fish. The experiment conducted at Champawat district of Uttarakhand located at 80° 10' E longitude, 29° 60' N Latitude and an altitude of 1750 m using polyponds for fish culture as an alternate system. It was observed that the water temperature of the polypond was 2-6 °C higher than that of the conventional earthen ponds. The growth rate of the fish cultured in polyponds was also observed to be 70 % superior to that of the earthen ponds. It can be concluded that the polyethylene film lined ponds are helpful for accelerations of fish production and to improve the socio-economic status of people in the hill area.
