ASSESSMENT OF PESTICIDE RESIDUES IN WATER AND SEDIMENTS OF CHANGA, MANZA AND TEPU RIVERS FLOWING THROUGH THE TERAI REGION OF WEST BENGAL, INDIA

Abstract

The present study reports the concentration levels of organochlorine (Dicofol) and organophosphate (Ethion and Chlorpyriphos) pesticide residues in the water and sediment samples from three perennial rivers, namely Changa, Manza and Tepu, flowing through the Terai region of West Bengal, India. Identification and quantification of pesticides were done by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the data were statistically analyzed using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Significant differences were found between water and sediment samples (p<=0.001) for all the three pesticides under study, and only dicofol in the river Tepu was significant at a slightly lower probability (p<=0.01).
