Abstract

Increased multidrug resistance has led to renewed interest in alternative medicine. Important aspect of alternative medicine includes herbo-mineral drugs which is a combination of medicinal plants and essential minerals used in treating infectious diseases. The present study human pathogenic E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. which are resistant to antibiotics were selected for antibacterial assay. Antibacterial activity of different herbo-mineral drugs were tested against these multidrug resistant bacteria isolates. Different concentrations of gum acacia suspension of Shilajit, and Gandhaka rasayana were tested by cup diffusion method. It was observed that the herbo-mineral drugs significantly inhibited all the isolates compared to antibiotics tested. The present study is therefore successful in indicating that these rasa preparations are useful in treatment of diseases associated with these multidrug resistant bacteria.
