MICROBIOLOGICAL SCREENING OF AEROMONAS HYDROPHILA FROM INFECTED FISHES LABEO ROHITA AND CATLA

Abstract

Pathogenesis of fishes can occurs when fishes were expose to aquatic pollutant and virulent pathogens entering into the water when there is a environmental stress condition. But very few research have been done in the determination of the infectious diseases of fishes. The present study designed to investigate the infection caused by Aeromonas hydrophila fin Labeo rohita and Catla catla. The results showed that Aeromonas hydrophila is a gram negative bacteria and biochemically positive for Catalase, oxidase, IMViC test and negative for Urease test. This shows that our 14 isolates from infected Rohu and Catla fishes are Aeromonas hydrophila. Antibiotic susceptibility test on Aeromonas hydrophila strains isolated from infected fishes were pathogenic and resistant to oxacillin, Rifampicin, Ciprofloxacin, Amoxycilin and Ampicillin antibiotics. The antibiotic susceptibility study of the isolates test revealed that, out of 14 cultures screened, 12 isolates were falling under resistant category and 2 isolates were sensitive. Due to the multiple antibiotics resistance, the pathogens may be responsible for outbreaks of diarhoea, if the fishes are consumed without proper cooking.
