Abstract

Invention of alternative fuels for internal combustion engines is necessary because of limited source of petroleum fuels and environmental concerns. Alcohols are showing very attractive feature since they are oxygenated and renewable fuels. Therefore In this work the effect of methanol content on performance and emission of 4-stroke single cylinder petrol engine is carried out experimentally. To get maximum efficiency with complete combustion, a twin spark ignition engine is used. One of the spark plug is operated at 32oBTDC while the other one is at 26oBTDC. The blends are prepared for 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35% of methanol with gasoline on mass basis and tests were performed for all blends as well as foe gasoline. With addition of methanol with gasoline the physical properties are improved due to higher volatility and octane number of methanol. The experimental results revealed that the fuel consumption and brake thermal efficiency is increased by increasing methanol content in blends. The emission results shows decrease in CO, UBHC, NOx.
