Abstract

This paper analyzes the potability of groundwater in and around the coconut husk retting area. The study area chosen is Mondaikadu of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, India. Groundwater samples were collected from 10 sampling points and analyzed using analytical instruments. It is observed that the potabilityis significantly affected by Coconut husk retting process. The pH level in the groundwater is found to beunacceptable (below the permissible limit) as per the WHO and BIS standards. All other parameters are within the limits, and it is rich in sodium, calcium and bicarbonates. The correlation coefficient was determined between each parameter. The result shows that EC is highly correlated with TDS, Hardness,Mg, Na and Cl. So, EC is selected as the dependent variables and TDS, Hardness, Mg, Na and Cl are selected as the independent variables. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model was created to predict the EC content in future. 50 samples are used to create the ANN model. It gives a good performance and the coefficient of determination.
