G. Manjula and S. Revathi

Abstract

The groundwater pollution created due to dumping of municipal solid waste near municipal solid waste landfill at Vellalore located in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, India is assessed. In this study, groundwater is collected from locations around the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) dumping area at Vellalore. Physico-Chemical characteristics such as pH, Electrical Conductivity (EC), Turbidity, Total Hardness (TH), Total Alkalinity (TA), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Sodium, Chloride, Potassium, Phosphate, and Nitrate were determined. Water quality index is predicted for the collected ground water samples by weighed Arithmetic water quality index method. The water quality index is an indicator of pollution levels in ground water. Assessment of Water Quality Index is carried out in 10 locations and results indicate that in 2 locations ground water was of good quality and in 7 locations ground water was of poor quality and in 1 location it was very poor.
