SUSTAINABLE USE OF WASTE CRUSHED ROCK DUST INCONCRETE AS PARTIAL REPLACEMENT OF CEMENT

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental study on concrete with partial replacement of cement using crushed rock dust (CRD). Cement is replaced with four percentages (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) of CRD by weight. Workability, density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and durability tests such as saturated water absorption, acid resistance test using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid are experimentally investigated. The results are compared with the control concrete (CC, CRD: 0%) designed for M20 grade. Flexural strength is improved for all the CRD replacement levels in concrete. Up to 20% CRD in concrete, no significant difference is observed on compressive strength, split tensile strength, saturated water absorption and acid resistance when compared with the control concrete. Even though there is a decrease in workability, the partial replacement of cement up to 20% by CRD reduces cement usage and thereby mitigating global warming.
