NUMERICAL MODELING OF TSUNAMI IN JEMBER REGENCY

Abstract

One of the 3 big tsunamis on the south coast of Java occurred on June 3, 1994. Jember regency affected by the tsunami as this region faced directly to the Indian Ocean. To know the impact of the tsunami in the past, we made a numerical modeling that can model an event with a relatively faster processing using COMCOT version of 1.7. Inputs model that were used were high point data, bathymetry, southern Java earthquake data on June 3, 1994 and MSL data. The basic principle was the process of tsunami propagation will produce data in the form of travel time and the height of the tsunami in the waters when heading towards to the coast. In the initial condition of tsunami generation, there was an increase of 2.613 meters of sea level and 1.849 meters of sea level fall, with the travel time of tsunami ranging from 36 minutes to 49 minutes until the location of virtual observation point.
