Abstract
Medicinal plants represent a rich source of antimicrobial and phytochemical agents. Plants are used medicinally in different countries of world and as source of many powerful drugs. A large number of Streptococcus and Lactobacillus species are involved in tooth decay and periodontal diseases. In the present study it is aimed to evaluate in vitro antibacterial effect of clove and ginger extract on Streptococcus Mutans (MTCC No. 497) and Lactobacilli acidophilus (MTCC No. 10307) by well diffusion technique. These results are antimicrobial activity of aqueous extract of clove which was more against Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli acidophilus than alcohol and ginger extract. But synergistic effect of Clove and ginger extract is higher than individual using. Mixture of clove and ginger extract give 25% minimum inhibitory concentration on S. mutants. Both plants may have potential for use in mouthwash for preventing dental caries.
