Abstract
The numbers of hydrocarbon degrading microbial population naturally increases in oil polluted soil than that of unpolluted soil. Two morphologically distinct bacterial colonies were isolated from crude oil contaminated sites of Assam, India for screening of hydrocarbon degrading strains. The biodegradation property of the isolates was evaluated by GC-MS analysis. Both the isolates AM-2 and AM-7 could degrade all the major components of petroleum oil to short length hydrocarbons within 60 days after inoculation. Based on 16s r DNA, the strain AM-2 was identified as Achromobacter sp. and strain AM-7 as Alcaligenesfaecalis.
