COMPARISON OF MEASURED ATMOSPHERIC METHANE (CH4) MOLE FRACTION USING SAMPLING AND CONTINOUS MONITORING AT BUKIT KOTOTABANG GAW STATION, INDONESIA

AGUSTA KURNIAWAN1

Abstract

This study has objective to compare results of measurement of atmospheric methane (CH4) mole fraction at Bukit Kototabang GAW (Global Atmosphere Watch) Station, Indonesia between two methods, which are sampling (by Air Kit Flask Sampler) and continuous monitoring. In Sampling Methods, air sampler brought to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), methane concentration measured using Chromatography Gas equipped with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID), while in continuous monitoring method, methane measured with Picarro G1301 equipped with Cavity Ring Down Spectrophotometer (CRDS) method. The result comparison showed good agreement, with Pearson Correlation r2 = 0.810. The average of difference of both measurements is 61.05 ppb, this is probably because of different level elevation of air sampler. Sampling method draw air only from one level elevation (32 meter), while continuous monitoring from three different level of elevation (10, 20 and 32) m.
