Abstract

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is a phytotoxic pollutant causing harmful impacts on plant species and their metabolism. Ozone has several potential effects on plants: direct reaction with cell membranes; generation of ROS and H2O2, negative impact on photosynthetic machinery and up or down regulation of antioxidants, defence reactions and variations in metabolic pathways. Tropospheric O3 causes changes in crop yield and quality. In this review, an overview of global ozone concentrations scenario is discussed and also their impact on agricultural crops and other plant species. A short and precise information about plant responses to tropospheric ozone in different regions of the world especially India has also been discussed which will give the future predictions in the coming time periods.
