Abstract

The developments of conductive and non-conductive coatings on piston crown and cylinder Internal Combustion (IC) engines have become more importance in modern engines due to their higher efficiency and lower emission. This review discusses about the different types of coating and their effects on engine performance and exhaust characteristics. Commonly, these coatings are made by different methods according to its composition and applications. The engine performance, emission, heat transfer characteristics, combustion characteristics and other properties resulted by this coatings are studied and compared with the standard engine. The deviations in the results are also analyzed in this paper. The effects of coating and operating conditions, under which the experimental studies are carried out, are deduced and their influences are discussed. Thus, this article gives an overall view of the effects, advantages and disadvantages of thermal and thermal barrier coatings are investigated based on the work done by the researchers. The works published so far in this area are reviewed, classified according to their objectives and presented in an organized manner with general conclusions.
