Abstract

The sandstorms of Sahara in south Algeria can influence on performance of solar panel. However, the life time of solar panel may be decreased as well as the solar cells performance, in addition, the traditional maintenance becomes expensive. In this study, we propose protection of the solar panel by plastic covering without decreasing the solar cells efficiency. First, the current-voltage characteristics and power of solar panel are studied for different angles and times in Oum El-Bouaghi region (East of Algeria) in order to determine the best position. After that, the solar panel(800 cm2) is covered by different plastics (transparent, blue and yellow). The current-voltage characteristics and efficiency are measured for different colors of plastics. The results show that a small decreasing of efficiency (1% around) is measured due to the plastic covering. But on the other hand, the solar panel is protected.
