Abstract

One of the major causes of arsenic toxicity is through oral consumption of contaminated water. It causes damage to all tissues. Effect of arsenic administration on protein and glycogen level was studied in the enterocytes of Swiss albino male mice. Mice were administered with single dose of sodium arsenate though oral gavage for a period of 30 days. Doses were calculated using the LD50values, as 1 mg/kg body weight and 3 mg/kg body weight. Enterocytes were isolated from intestine of Musmusculus, was used for the study. Dose dependent increase in body weight was observed.Significant increase in glycogen content was observed in both test groups compared to control.Dose dependent decrease in protein content was observed. The results indicate that sodiumarsenate intoxication elevates glycogen level, decreases protein level and increases body weight.
