K. Sundarayamini and P.D. Arumairaj

Abstract

The use of marginal Lands for the development of construction field has enconouraged various methods which are in practice for improving the properties of soil. Mostly stabilization of soil can be carried with lime, cement, fibers, waste materials and geosynthetic material and in case of deeper underground soil stabilization, which are insufficient in strengthen process and chemicals used polluting the water with soil underground Most of these are not eco-friendly which requires expensive and heavy machinery. To overcome such disadvantages green approach using biological process may prove an eco-friendly solution to soil improvement. This paper aims to review the different metabolic activities leading to Microbial induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), challenges faced by the overall reaction of bacterial biogeochemical process and their geotechnical applications to enhance the properties of soil.
