Abstract

Trails were conducted to evaluate the growth performance of Labeo fimbriatus stocks from three peninsular rivers viz. Cauvery, Tungabhadra and Vedavathi. Labeo fimbriatus, a fringed lip carp widely distributed in rivers, reservoirs of peninsular and central India, is regarded as a candidate species for freshwater aquaculture, particularly in peninsular region. The Cauvery, the Tungabhadra and the Vedavathi stocks were evaluated both under mono and polyculture systems, over a period of 24 weeks with a stocking density of 6000 fingerlings/ha. In both the culture systems, Cauvery stock grew faster than Vedavathi and Tungabhadra stocks. The overall analysis (Least Square Means) under different culture systems indicates that the growth of Cauvery stock was significantly higher (117.63±1.02) than Tungabhadra (70.36±1.03) and Vedavathi stocks 68.12±1.09). However, growth was not significantly different (pˆ 0.05) between Tungabhadra and Vedavathi stocks. The survival was higher in Cauvery (88.23%) compare to Tungabhadra (81.57%) and Vedavathi (78.10) stocks. The genotype-environment interaction was relatively low and nonsignificant. The present study concluded that the Cauvery stock of Labeo fimbriatus is of greater practical significance for freshwater aquaculture than other two stocks.
