SMALL-SCALE CHICKEN SLAUGHTERHOUSE INDUSTRIES:PRODUCTION AND EFFLUENT QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS

Abstract

Chicken meat is one of the essential protein needed for human growth. In Malaysia, there are 860 of small – scale chicken slaughterhouse industries compared to 317 of large- scale chicken slaughter house industries. These small - scale chicken slaughterhouse industries are commonly located near the residential area and sub - urban area without effluent treatment. This paper explained the procedure of handling the chicken at small - scale chicken slaughterhouse industry,production of volumes and quality characteristics effluent. Samples of chicken slaughter house effluent were collected at Parit Samijan, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, and Johor, Malaysia. A small -scale chicken slaughterhouse effluent produced of volumes 88.34-litre per day and exhibit high concentration of BOD, COD and TSS with the value of 2152 mg/L, 5381 mg/L and 297 mg/L respectively. Therefore, proper wastewater treatment in the small - scale chicken slaughter house industries are vital for the safe disposal.
