Abstract

Diverse type of industries and their associated processes have a profound negative impact on the soil profile along with anthropogenic activities is a common phenomenon. Soil samples collected from twelve different locations for the year 2011-2012 in the vicinity of paper industry were analysed for major ions and metals following standard procedures. Based on the chemical analysis of soil characteristics it is clear that the soil quality in Sirpur Kaghaz nagar town area is deteriorated with respect to important parameters such as pH, EC, % Organic Carbon. Major ions such as Ca+,Mg+, and Na+ were also found to be high. Some of the important metal ions like Zn, Fe, Cu, in the soil samples were also found to be in excess indicating the impact of effluents from pulp and paper industry and excessive usage of agricultural pesticides and fertilizers.
