Abstract

Nano coral-based Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been successfully prepared by using precipitation method through the variable of Phosphoric Acid molarity and sintering temperature. The variable was selected due to the abundance of mineral compounds found in coral, and thus strict parameters were necessary to synthesize it. The nano coral was shaped through a mechanical process called High Energy Milling (HEM- 3D), producing particles of 64.93 nm in size The results showed that using 1 mole of Phosphoric Acid and a sintering temperature of 900 oC over a period of 3 hours on nano coral results in the formulation of 93.8% Calcium Phosphate in HAp phase and the rest in Tricalcium Phosphate (TCP) phase. Sintering temperature plays a role in determining the phase of Calcium Phosphate produced. Increasing the duration of sintering at 900 oC from 3 hours to 5 hours proved to raise the production of HAp to 96.6%.
