Abstract

Oral lichen planus is one of the most common dermatologic diseases that appear in the oral cavity. There is much evidence that suggests an immunological background and the role of the cytokines in the development of oral lichen planus (OLP) has been investigated. The salivary levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) of OLP in Iraqi patients and compared them to healthy individuals. Saliva sample were collected from 35 patients with OLP and 30 healthy controls. The technique used to reveal saliva level of TNF-α and TGF-β by Enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA). This study revealed significant increased (P < 0.001) in saliva level of TNF-α OLP patient (132.46±29.68 ng/L) as compared to healthy control (20.52±10.19 ng/L). Moreover, the salivary TGF-β significantly decreased in OLP patients (75.56±22.58 ng/L) in comparison to that in healthy control (190.93±31.99 ng/L), (P >0.001). According to present study, higher levels of TNF-in saliva compared to healthy individuals and salivary low levels in patients of TGF-β than the control play an important role in oral lichen planus.
