USING OF JUGLANS REGIA PEELS AS ADSORBENT FOR HEAVY METAL REMOVAL FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

HIBA A. JASIM

Abstract

In this research, Juglans regia peels were used as adsorbent to remove Ni and Cd ions from aqueous solutions through batch experiments. Juglans regia peels were treated separately by 0.1 M NaOH, 0.1 M HCl, 0.6M citric acid and distilled water and their adsorption ability was compared. The adsorption experiments were studied as a function of contact time and adsorbent weight (amount). The alkali-treated walnut shells had effective removal efficiency from (68.5-95%) for Ni ions and from (83-95%) for Cd ions which was higher than HCl, citric acid and raw walnut shells. Maximum adsorption of heavy metal ions (for all treatments) was observed at 25 g/250 mL adsorbent weight and 2 hrs. of adsorption.
