ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF UVILLA (PHYSALIS PERUVIANA L)EXTRACTS AGAINST SALMONELLA SP. STRAINSFAVIAN BAYAS-MOREJÓNA, ANGÉLICA TIGREA, MA. BERNARDA RUILOVAA,ODERAY MERINOA, MIRIAM MERINOA, MOISÉS ARREGUÍNA, SONIA SALAZARA,RIVELIÑO RAMÓNA, JOSÉ SÁNCHEZ-MORALESB, LUIS VERDEZOTOB, IVÁN MORENOA AND CECILIA GÓMEZAAbstract The objective of this research was: to examine the in vitro antimicrobial activities of extracts of the leaves and berries of uvilla (Physalisperuviana L). The extract of this vegetable was obtained by ethanolicmaceration. The inhibitory effects of extracts were tested against Salmonella spp. strains isolates from three types of meats (beef, pork and chicken) by disc diffusion test. The results obtained showed that berries and leaves uvilla has antimicrobial activity against Salmonella spp., when the mature berries in fresh state showed major antimicrobial activity (mBFr). The activity of this extract was similar to that shown by Gentamicin and Ampicillin. Although, the level of resistance to ampicilina was 96.88% and to gentamicina was 93,75%. The results indicate that uvilla extracts might be exploited as natural antibiotic for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by Salmonella and could be useful in understanding the relations between traditional cure sand current medicines.
