BIOLOGICAL DECOLORIZATION OF SIMULATED BASIC DYE EFFLUENTS BY ALGAL SPIROGYRA SPECIES

S. VENKATA MOHAN, N. CHANDRASEKHAR RAO AND K. KRISHNA PRASAD

Abstract

Biological treatment of simulated basic dye effluents of azine chemical class using algal Spirogyra Species was investigated for decolorization in the aqueous phase. The results revealed the potential of the algal species to remove dye colour. The dye colour removal was found to depend on both the dye concentration and algal biomass. Maximum dye colour removal was observed on the third day for all the system conditions studied. Based upon the results and its interpretation a dye colour removal mechanism was postulated and was attributed to biosorption, bioconversion and biocoagulation.
