HERBICIDE RESISTANT CROPS AND WEEDS - A REVIEW

Kanta Rani, Manisha Agrawal and Puneet Kumar Chhokar

Abstract

Herbicide is an important tool for weed management in modern agriculture. However, due to evolution of herbicide resistance in weeds and no discovery of new mode of action has made the weed management a challenge. Herbicide resistant crops are an alternative for broadening the weed control options, as besides providing broad spectrum weed kill they also also helps in reducing the risk of herbicide carry over effect. Glyphosate resistant crops have made the weed control effective and economical but recently the excessive use have led to the evolution of glyphosate resistant weeds. The gene flow from the herbicide resistant crop is also an emerging challenge and many weeds are now becoming the constraints to the sustainable crop production. Herbicide resistant crops as well as weed management practice should be practiced in such a way that reduces the risk of evolution of herbicide resistant weeds and Integrated Weed Management practices should be followed for sustainable crop production.
