Abstract

Nutrient removal in wastewater is a requirement in the tertiary treatment of domestic and industrial wastewater recycling. The potentials of sewage and dairy industry sludge to reduce nitrate in the presence of five different carbon sources viz., glucose, glycerol, starch, methanol and acetic acid were determined in a bench scale batch-process. Nitrate reduction at 96 h was about 95 to 100% when glucose, glycerol, starch and acetic acid were added as carbon sources in both sewage sludge and dairy industry Sludge treated nitrate. Ammonium and nitrite accumulation were found in all concentrations of carbon sources. Ammonium production was higher in sewage sludge treated nitrate medium than in the dairy industry sludge treated medium. The nitrite production was higher in dairy industry sludge treated nitrate mediam than the sewage sludge. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) requirements for nitrate reduction was generally lower in treatment with acetic acid as carbon source than with the other carbon sources in both sewage and dairy sludge. A very slow nitrate reduction rate was noticed in methanol treated nitrate medium of sewage and dairy sludges indicating the low denitrifying activity. Thus the carbon source plays a vital role in the rate of denitrification.
