GENETIC TRANSFORMATION IN STRAWBERRY - A REVIEW

AMJAD, M. HUSAIN AND DINESH K. SRIVASTAVA

Abstract

The progress of genetic transformation and its extension from simple microorganisms to plants has been a land mark development in biological sciences. Strawberry being an important fruit crop has a lot of potential for genetic manipulation to improve characteristics like disease resistance, insect resistance, flavour, texture and shelf life. In strawberry, Agrobacterium-mediated transformation has been a technique of choice for transformation even though a few direct gene transfer protocols have also been reported. The present article gives an insight of success of till date and the future prospects of potential applications of genetic transformation in this commercially important plant species. and vine-weevil, which implies that the fruit has a severe loss potential (Mitchell, 1985). In strawberry, the characters like high ploidy level and heterozygosity impose difficulties when this species is bred according to conventional strategies and this makes strawberry an especially suitable target for manipulation on a gene level. The application of genetic engineering to strawberry varieties has paved the way for the generation of new cultivars
