Abstract

A gram negative bacterium (Salmonella) was isolated from a chromium-contaminated site that was capable of inducing a plasmid when grown in chromium enriched medium. The isolate was able to induce a high molecular weight fragment from its genomic DNA when it was incubated with the high concentration of 2mMollit-1 Chromium. Analysis of the genomic DNA and plasmid DNA from the isolate revealed a high molecular weight genomic DNA breakups and two lower molecular weight plasmid DNA, Hence the mechanism of resistance in Salmonella is plasmid mediated from its own genomic DNA breakup.
