ANTIBIOTIC PRODUCTION BY STREPTOMYCES SPP. AND INFLUENCE OF VARIOUS C AND N SOURCES ON ITS PRODUCTIONBHAGWANDAS BULCHANDAN AND M. PARVATEESAMAbstract Soil samples from various localities of Ajmer, Rajasthan were screened as a source of actinomycetes with potent bioactive compounds. In all 40 actinomycetes were isolated of which 24 isolates showed distinct macromorphological characters and were selected to establish their antibacterial/ antimicrobial activity against test organisms. These isolates showed varying degree of antimicrobial activity. From the above finally five potent isolates were selected for detailed characterization and were identified as belonging to the genus Streptomyces. These isolates were subjected to studies to establish the effect of C and N sources on antibioctic production. The study established that starch and ammonium nitrate were the most suitable C and N source.
