Abstract

Thermal treatment has become one of the major technologies for the treatment of sewage sludge to secure final products. In this study the incinerated ash and molten slag as products of thermal treatment were investigated to be utilized in mortar making. The incinerated ash was obtained by burning the dewatered sludge up to 900°C for 3 hr and molten slag produced by melting the ash, at I 450°C. Results showed that by replacing 5% of cement with incinerated ash, the compressive strength was improved by 50% compared to the standard product by getting a compressive strength of 30.80 Nimm2. Similarly, by replacing 50% of sand with molten slag, the compressive strength was found to be higher than the standard product with a compressive strength of 26.361\1/mm2. By having a higher compressive strength, incinerated ash and molten slag could be strongly proposed to be utilized in the making of mortar, in terms of replacing a certain amount of the cement and sand proportion, respectively.
