STUDIES ON ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTIES OF LEAVES OMZACI OF SOME EDIBLE PLANTSD,H.TAMBEKAR AND M.A. KHARATEAbstract Several plants in folk and other traditional systems of medicines are therapeutic and have antimicrobial activity. Efforts are thus directed to identify these plant leaves or their extract, which have antimicrobial property and no ill effect. Extract of 22 plants leaves were studied for their antimicrobial properties and concluded that Ocimum sanctum showed inhibitory effect on E.coli, S. aureus, E. feacalis, S. typhi, V. cholerae, Pr. mirabilis, Ps. aeruginosa, Yer. enterocolitica and piper betle on E.coli, S. aureus, E. feacalis, S. typhi, V. cholerae, Pr. mirabilis, Ps. aeruginosa, Yer. enterocolitica. The leaves extract of various plants such as Tulsi, pudina and betle showed antimicrobial activity of E.coli, S. aureus, E. feacalis, S. typhi, V. cholerae, Pr. mirabilis, Ps. aeruginosa, Yer. enterocolitica while Piper betle showed resistance to Str. pneumoniae. Thus, these leaves of these plants can be used in our daily diet to control urinary tract infection, skin infection, enteric fever and respiratory infections.
