EFFECT OF DIESEL HYDROCARBON ON GROWTH AND DEGRADATION OF DIESEL BY ALGAE ECTOCARPUS SP.

R. YADAV AND B.A. MHATRE

Abstract

Consequence of diesel hydrocarbon on growth and metabolism as well as degradation potential of oil by algae Ectocarpus sp. was assessed. Ectocarpus sp.is Phaeophyceanalgae having ribbon shaped chloroplasts, on which both inhibitory and stimulatory effects of oil on growth and macromolecular synthesis were observed. With respect to capability of algae for degradation, it was found to degrade 30% and 40% of a crude oil and water soluble fractions, respectively, when tested under appropriate and optimized conditions. Oil degradation by potential algae was examined by monitoring the formation of carbon dioxide and water soluble compounds through sequential reactions. The study revealed the impact of oil and its fractions on growth and different rate and degree of oil degradation at 1% concentration of crude oil and varying concentration of water soluble fractions.
