CERIUM(IV) TUNGSTATE AS ECO-FRIENDLY BRONSTED ACID CATALYSTA.P. APSARA AND S. ANJALIAbstract Amorphous Cerium(IV) tungstate has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis (EDS), XRD, thermal analysis (TGA) and spectral analysis (FTIR, UV-Visible) in addition to ion exchange capacity and chemical stability. The protons contained in the structural hydroxyl groups of the material are the active sites. The material shows good potential as cation exchanger and Bronsted acid catalyst. Na+ exchange capacity was found to be 1.77 meq/g. Propyl acetate has been obtained in high yield (89%) using Cerium(IV) tungstate as solid acid catalyst. The use of CW as solid acid catalyst also eliminates the problem of acid pollution in esterification reactions where sulphuric acid is the conventional catalyst.
