Abstract

Finding alternate sources to fossil fuels for diesel engines are prime important due to thinning petroleum assets and the environmental consequences of exhaust gases from fossil fuelled engines. Fossil fuel use in transportation is the leading contributor to urban air pollution and to global warming. Renewable fuel sources such as biodiesel can play a modest role in reducing greenhouse gases and other potentially hazardous emission related to fossil fuels. Renewable fuels such as Vegetable oil and Waste cooking oil based biodiesel are impending contributors to solving the energy problem. This article is a literature review on waste cooking oil based biodiesel combustion, performance and emissions. The scientists and researchers conducted tests by using different oils and their blends with diesel. They conducted tests with waste cooking oil, either chemically altered or blended with diesel to prevent the engine failure. It was reported that that torque and brake power reduces due to lower calorific value of WCO biodiesel was about 13% lower than standard diesel and BSFC for WCO biodiesel operation was on an average 11.6% higher than standard diesel operation due to higher fuel density, higher fuel consumption and lower brake power due to lower calorific value. Also reported that the combustion characteristics of WCO biodiesel are similar as diesel and blends were found with shorter ignition delay, higher ignition temperature, higher ignition pressure and peak heat release. Researchers studied that emissions such as HC and CO decreases and NOx increases with WCO biodiesel compared to pure diesel and vast reduction in smoke intensity was observed with increase in percentage in blend especially at higher loads
