Abstract

Nine genotypes of brinjal were crossed in a Diallel method excluding reciprocals. This study was showed that estimates of both the combining ability (general and specific combining ability) were significant for all characters except for branches per plant where GCA and for plant height, days to first flower and branches per plant SCA was recorded non-significant. AKL-11 and Asond Round are best general combiner for fruit diameter, fruit weight and yield while, Selection-167 and GADB-1 for earliness. The specific combining ability studies showed that ten crosses depicted highly significant specific combining ability effects and most of the promising crosses arose from parental combinations with low x low or medium x low general combiner in most of important traits likewise yield and contributing characters. The hybrid Local C-1 x Asond Long and Asond Long X GADB–1 showed high sca effects for maximum desirable characters. An ideal combination to be exploited is one, where high degree of specific combining ability is present in addition to high general combining ability effects in both or at least one parent.
