ANTARYAMI KUMAR ADHISHWAR AND SUNIL KUMAR CHOUDHARY

Abstract

Sediment is an important edahic factor which influences not only the water quality standing upon it but also influences qualitative and quantitative distribution of biota along with their productivity. Gogabil Lake is located in Amadabad block area, 6 km. East of Manihari and about 19 km. South-East to district headquarter of Katihar. It lies in between 25°22.5263 NL and 87°41216.63 EL. The total water spread area of the Gogabil is about 59.32 km². The area of Gogabil which remains submerged throughout the year is about 19.68 km2. The sediment characteristic of Gogabil Lake has been assessed for two years from October, 2009 to September, 2011. The most important parameters affecting the sediment characteristics are pH, % Carbon, % Organic matter, Phosphate-phosphorus and Nitrate-nitrogen. The pH of benthic sediment varied from 7 to 7.5 during the study period. It shows soil as slightly alkaline in nature. The % Carbon and % Organic matter were recorded with maximum value of 2.85 and 4.91, while the minimum were 0.87 and 1.55 respectively. The higher value was recorded in winter season, whereas lower value in summer season. The phosphate-phosphorus was found to vary from 3.16mg/100g to 5.74mg/100g. The higher value was observed in March whereas lower value in the month of May. The nitrate nitrogen was found to vary with in a very narrow range from 0.076 mg/100g to 0.279mg/100g. The higher value was recorded in summer season whereas lower in rainy season. The above range of data indicates the Gogabil Lake is non-polluting in nature.
