RECYCLING OF CRUMBED RUBBER FOR OIL REMOVAL

MAAMOUN AL-JEDAIH

Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the possibility of using crumbed rubber for oil removal, and to determine the removal efficiency through batch and column tests. Batch test resultsshowed that crumbed rubber achieved high removal efficiency of up to 95.2% at adsorbent dosageof 20g with uptake capacity of 625mg/g. Oil removal efficiency increased as crumbed rubber dosageincreased and as crumbed rubber size decreased. Uptake capacity increased as the initial oilconcentration increased. The isotherm data showed best fit with Freundlich model with acorrelation coefficient of 95%. Lower correlation coefficients of 71.1% and 71.4% were obtained forLangmuir and R-D models respectively, indicating a heterogamous adsorption process. Theremoval efficiency of the adsorption column decreased from 98.4 to 56.9 % during 63 minutesindicating a high adsorption affinity of oil on crumbed rubber. The results obtained proved thefeasibility and applicability of using crumbed rubber for oil removal which has high economic and environmental values.
