Abstract
The art of dyeing was as old as human civilization. From the historical records it is learnt thatnatural colorants were available. Natural dyes comprise those colorants (dye and pigments) that areobtained from animal and vegetable matter without chemical processing. The discovery and use ofnatural dyes and pigments contributed to the maintenance of the age-old bond between humankind and nature and could now help to revive and enhance it. Natural dyes and colorants are anessential part of the worlds ecological and cultural heritage; their selection and uses to createcolours are common to all civilizations.
