NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF A ROUND JET NORMAL TO A CROSSFLOW: APPLICATION TO POLLUTANT DISPERSION

R. Santhanakrishnan and K. Sundararaj

Abstract

This paper presents a three dimensional numerical simulation of a circular turbulent jet issuing transversely into a uniform air stream using FLUENT package which is based on the finite volume method . The jet to cross flow velocity ratio is considered to be equal to four and the structure of the flow field is discussed at various sections of the flow. To predict fluid flow parameters Reynolds stress turbulent model is used. Velocity vectors plotted in the sections normal to the cross stream conforms the formation of the contra rotating vortices which expand in the downstream direction. The temperature distribution was obtained at different sections of the flow. In the sections normal to the cross stream reduction in temperature is observed to decrease in the regions away from the center of the vortices. The results obtained in this study could be used as the benchmark data for experimental studies.
